THE TREATMENT AND WHAT TO EXPECT

During the consultation, Frances will take a full medical history and be looking to identify the cause of any problems or imbalances. From there, a selection of points will be chosen. She will then insert several very fine sterile single use needles which will be left in position for around 15 to 20 minutes. Acupuncture is typically painless and patients often report a great sense of relaxation during and after the treatment. Over a course of treatment cumulative benefit can be seen.

The original theory behind acupuncture treatment is that the healthy functioning of the body is governed by the flow of “qi” (often translated as “energy”) through a system of channels under the skin. When this flow of qi is impaired, illness occurs. By inserting fine needles at various points along the channels, the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.

Blockages in the flow of qi can manifest as pain, hot or cold sensations, changes in body functions. These signs, along with pulse and tongue diagnosis can help determine which points and channels are most suitable for treatment.

Acupuncture also includes other techniques such as cupping, moxibustion or acupressure.

Frances will be guided throughout your treatment by the sensations you experience which can vary, especially when treating children and young adults and the needles can be removed at any time.

Clients are often nervous the first time they attend a session, but are quickly reassured by Frances’ calm and reassuring manner and the tranquility of the environment.

This varies depending on the severity of your symptoms and the nature of your condition, we will take time in your initial consultation to work out a timescale which bests suits your individual needs. However, we do usually see clients around one or two times per week for first four weeks.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

As a general guideline, think in terms of 4 – 6 sessions (usually weekly) however response to treatment differs considerably from person to person. In many cases, patients experience significant relief after a few acupuncture treatments. Some patient’s experience relief almost immediately, especially from some acute conditions. Treatment of other, long-term (chronic) or complex conditions require more treatment over a longer time. As a rule, the longer you have had the complaint, the longer it will probably take to put right. Please be assured that you will not receive more treatments than you need.

Patients’ progress is reviewed regularly and you will be kept well informed.

Remember that the aim of Chinese Medicine is to correct the root cause of the disease and not just the symptoms.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE MY TREATMENT?

You are advised to eat a light snack before you come for treatment. Do not drink alcohol, smoke excessively or engage in strenuous exercise before or after treatment. Do not rush and try to give yourself plenty of time… especially if you need to find somewhere to park. If you are on any medications please bring a list of these with you at your first appointment.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

There are very few side effects from acupuncture when practiced by a fully qualified practitioner of traditional acupuncture. Any minor side effects that do occur, such as dizziness or bruising around needle points, are mild and self-correcting.

Two independent studies published in the British Medical Journal have concluded that serious adverse reaction from acupuncture is less than 1 in 10,000 which is significantly less than western or orthodox medicine.
